It’s Up to Us Now

Yeast acts in the same way as humans, it seems.  If you take yeasts and give them energy in the form of sugar, they gobble up the energy as fast as they can, reproduce wildly out of control and then wipe themselves out in their own waste products.  Over the last forty years that we have known about climate change, and over the last seventeen years since Kyoto, Our response has been entirely like yeast; there is nothing we have done that is any different to what yeast would have done.

So says Franny Armstrong, director of The Age of Stupid, in her final reflection from Copenhagen.  She goes on to reflect that her generation has at last something to be noteworthy for; every generation before ours didn’t know about global warming, and for every generation after ours it will be too late to do anything anyway. Her final, rather poignant hope is that ordinary citizens will just get on and reduce their emissions so that in a year’s time, when COP16 meets, our representatives can say ‘We’ve actually done it.’

It looks like our only way forward, folks. Sign up to 10:10 here, then set about reducing your own emissions. We’ll do our best to help. We’ve even got the 10:10 badges made from a recycled Jumbo Jet. Contact us, ask for a free home energy check, buy a badge or just do it yourself.  But do it. Please.  We have no-one left but each other.

Hi folks - anyone still out there or are you all asleep in front of the telly after too much turkey.
Have you noticed hardly anyone bothers to leave comments on our blog unless we have upset someone in America!!!
Well I don’t intend to upset anyone - peace and good will to all - that’s me BUT I DO MEAN TO DISTURB YOU AND ASK YOU TO MAKE A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION THAT YOU WILL KEEP.
Please bother to comment on our site, look at it each week and spare a few minutes to tell the world what you are doing to make a difference. It’s easy to say we will reduce carbon emissions sometime - but sometime is too late, we must do it now. Well here’s my resolution, use the car less and I will publically log my progress.
    Happy new year!!

I live just over a mile from the shops and still use the car too much for short journies. I must use my bike more or allow more time so I can walk.

10,000 miles in an average car per year produces 3.5 tonnes of carbon so this is something I should be able to cut down a bit.

We can help and encourage each other on these pages - so go on, give it a go and start blogging.

Was tempted to use the car today to go shopping in town BUT kept my resolution and walked. It was good exercise, saved a few kg’s of carbon but best of all I met several people on the way I would otherwise not have spoken to.
